Just a short way from Shell Campground you will find yourself taken back to prehistoric times when giant animals roamed the earth. Paleontologists from The Virginia Museum of Natural History and The University of Wyoming have discovered prehistoric artifacts in the hills around Shell, Wyoming.

Dig sites vary in distance from Shell Campground ranging from 10 to 17 miles.  There are numerous sites that are open to the public where people can watch the workers dig.  Those that are interested can drive to the sites on their own or there are 2 options available for transportation and participation in the digs.  They can make arrangements with Nick Fraser from the Virginia Museum of Natural History or arrangements can be made with Bob Simon of Dinosaur Safari's.  Click on either of these links to email Nick or Bob to make arrangements for your tours.  Arrangements made with Nick takes you to the digs being conducted by VMNH and include meals with the cost of digging.  Dinosaur Safari's takes you to private digs and arrangements can be made to purchase some of the bones if you like.
